Experience Enhancement
Spotify is a leading music streaming service with over 406 million monthly listeners globally. Through research and user feedback, there were common problem (pain) points with certain processes of the application.
About
Challenge
Identifying and addressing pain point by redesigning and improving existing features that solve the user’s frustrations and create a better user experience.
User Research
Through research and conducting interviews with active Spotify listeners, the following pain points were identified.
Process of adding song(s) into desired playlist
Process of sharing playlists
User Persona
Tara, 20
Tara is a first year double major college student living on campus. From attending classes to being active in multiple clubs, Tara’s schedule doesn’t often allow for her to stay connected with her friends. She and her friends listen to same genre of music, so they are constantly sharing songs throughout the week. She wishes Spotify had an improved function to add songs and share her playlists with friends.
Frustrations
Having to constantly send updated playlists to her friends.
Process of adding song into desired playlist is too time consuming.
When encountering a song she likes for the first time, Tara just adds the song into the standard “Liked Songs” playlist to later add into her desired playlist.
Add a song to playlist
Current design
Spotify currently has users clicking the meatball menu icon on the top right corner of the app in order to open a list of additional options that contain the “add to playlist” function. This is an additional step for users when adding a newly encountered song into a playlist he/she desires.
Users tend to only use the “heart” icon located on the main screen to minimize time spent saving songs. However, this function only adds the song into the “Liked Songs” playlist, from which the user would have to move again into their desired playlist.
Redesigned
By adding the “add to playlist” function to the main play screen shortens the time of saving a song, while allowing the user to add the song into their desired playlist.
Share playlist
Through research and user surveys, it was evident that most users shared their Spotify playlists with their community. The current process of sharing a playlist is only possible by sharing through an external link. For example, users can share by message, copied link, social media platforms, etc. Users have found this multi-step process of sharing inconvenient.
By creating an internal sharing feature, users can more easily share playlists with friends. This system allows users to share playlist with their designated friend list on Spotify.
What I Learned
Through my research, I was able to identify common pain points shared among the users. The functions added were aimed to shorten the time spent while improving the process with which a user organized his/her personal media library.
